All CMAA / NBBR Certificates carry a unique QRC (Quick Reference Code) Smart Tag which when scanned by a suitable smart phone or tablet will open up the Black Belt Register allowing for an easy authenticity check.
Time Served Between Grades
Please note that when applying for a time served award the applicant must be able to show the relevant number of years of active training/teaching since their last grade as per the following. Under equal opportunities we do not have
minimum age requirements for senior Dan/Black Belt grades, so long as the following criteria has been met the grade will be awarded. Our time served requirements between each Dan/Black Belt grade are:
1st Dan to 2nd Dan - 2 Years of continuous active service/training awarded by physical grading. (Instructors unable to take a physical grading should contact the CMAA).
2nd Dan to 3rd Dan - 3 years of continuous active service/training awarded by physical grading (students) or time served (Instructors).
3rd Dan to 4th Dan - 4 years of continuous active service/training awarded based on time served.
5th Dan will be awarded after 5 years of continuous active service/training awarded based on time served.
5 years of active service/training also applies to grades of 6th, 7th, 8th etc...
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. The required years for time served awards may be reduced on a case by case basis.
2. Time served awards may be applied for from January 1st of the year due.
3. Should there be a break in continuous active service/training then the years required between grades will begin again from the date active service/training resumed.
Past Time Served Accreditation
In the interest of fairness senior Dan Grade applicants, for 4th Dan and over, may have past time served accredited towards their next grade. For example if a person spent 6 years as a 1st Dan then went on to 2nd Dan the 3rd Dan on time they may claim the overspent years between 1st Dan and 2nd Dan towards their future grades. Please note at least 3 years must have been served at the current grade and we would require documented evidence of all previous Dan/Black Belt grade dates to verify applications of this nature.
Back Dating of Time Served Grades
If an applicant has spent more active time at grades of 4th Dan and above than they should have we may back date their next grade award to when they should have actually received it in order to correct the 'time line'. Should this back dating then place them due for more grades we may award a maximum of one grade above. For example if a person applying for time served 4th Dan received 3rd Dan 14 years previously we may back date the 4th Dan and then award 5th Dan so long as active training/teaching can be evidenced.

Certification and grade promotions are only available to CMAA club members. Evidence of past grades will be required from non CMAA club members, all fees are non-refundable even if your listing application is unsuccessful.
